The castle Stadeck is a moated castle in the municipality Stadecken-Elsheim in Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

location

Stadeck Castle, which originally stood free on a headland of the Selz , is now fully integrated into the center of Stadecken-Elsheim. It stands at around 147 meters above sea level.

history

In 1276 the castle was built by Count Eberhard I. von Katzenelnbogen . It was mentioned in a document in 1291. In 1349 Count Johann II and Eberhard IV von Katzenelnbogen signed a contract with Count Walram von Sponheim to finance the construction of the Stadecken Castle, which they shared, and turned it into an administrative center.

The village and the castle came into the possession of the Margraves of Baden in 1469 and later passed to the Count Palatine of Zweibrücken . In 1632 the castle was destroyed and later rebuilt.

In addition to the residential house and the castle barn, the castle complex also contains remains of the curtain wall and the corner tower. The courtyard and the castle garden are not built-up areas. The facility also includes a smaller barn and the former office and school building.

use

The castle's house is privately owned and inhabited. The historic castle garden can be visited. The castle barn is owned by the municipality and is used as a ballroom for public and private events for up to 150 people, partly including the adjacent castle courtyard.

Since 1970, the Stadecken-Elsheim-based association of friends and supporters of Stadeck Castle has been dedicated to researching and preserving the castle.
