The ruins of the castle Stain ( Slovenian degree Kamen , German stone castle ) stands on a rocky ridge in the valley of Drage near the village Begunje (German: Vigaun ) of the municipality of Radovljica in the Gorenjska region ( Upper Carniola ).
history
The hill fort was first mentioned in 1263 as Castrum Lapis and in 1350 as Stain . It was built by the Ortenburg counts to protect the trade routes in the upper Savetal over the Karawanken . After the Ortenburgers died out in 1418, the castle passed to the Counts of Cilli . Then the castle came to the Seebacher from Smlednik. Subsequently, ownership of the castle went to Georg von Lamberg .
In the 15th century, the lower part of the castle was gradually expanded along the rock platform between the two lock towers. The threat of Turkish attacks and new firearms shaped the final image of the castle's expansion in the 16th century. The castle was abandoned in the 18th century and the Lamberg owners of both properties moved to the more contemporary Katzenstein Castle in the center of the village, while the castle was gradually abandoned to decay and even had to be used as building material.
In 1959, conservation work began on the castle. The ruin was made accessible with wooden stairs and bridges.
