The castle Tamarit (on Catalan de Castell Tamarit ) is on the outskirts of Tarragona in Spain lying castle, whose origins go back to the 11th century.

history

The place Tamarit with castle was from the time of Charlemagne (around 800 after the turn of the times) to about 1118 AD (conquest of Tarragona) border fortress of the Franconian Empire and France against the Moors.

Tamarit Castle belonged to the county of Barcelona when it was built and was part of a system of around 40 castles in the basin of the Gaià River , which were built during the Reconquista . Their task was, among other things, to defend the coast on which it is located against attacks by North African and Ottoman pirates from North Africa.

Tamarit Castle was originally owned by the von Claramunt family of knights until the 13th century. The still visible enclosing walls were built in the 14th century. At that time, the castle passed to the Archbishops of Tarragona , who connected the fortress with the old residential buildings. The castle was owned by the archbishops until the 19th century, but from the 17th century in a condominium with the Montserrat family . Carlos II granted Francisco de Montserrat the title of Marquis of Tamarit in 1681 . He was Governor of Tarragona, Lord of Montoliu and the Barony of Altafulla .

In the 18th century, the enclosing walls of Tamarit Castle were renewed and the keep was built so that the complex grew to its present size. In 1916, the American industrialist Charles Deering from the Archdiocese of Tarragona acquired Tamarit. He had the interior prepared by the Catalan artists Ramon Casas i Carbó and Joan Ruiz in a romantic style while preserving Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance components.

During the Spanish Civil War , a department of the anarchist Federación Anarquista Ibérica wanted to set fire to the church of the castle and the important baroque altar . Since they were told that the castle had a North American owner and that this was also the patron of Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol and, in 1910, the founder of the Museu Maricel in Sitges , they abandoned the project.

In 1992, Deering's heirs sold the castle to an investor who now operates a hotel there.
