Charles Deering

Charles Deering (born July 31, 1852 in South Paris, Maine , † February 5, 1927 in Miami , Florida ) was an American industrialist and art patron .

His father William Deering (1826-1913) founded the Deering Harvester Company in Illinois . Charles Deering graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1873 and served as a naval officer until 1881, when he joined his father's company. In 1883 he married Marrion Whipple. The couple had three children. In 1902, under the patronage of JP Morgan , Deering Harvester merged with the agricultural machinery company founded by Cyrus McCormick and the International Harvester Company. Charles Deering became chairman of the board.

Deering was also a lover of the arts. In 1910 he had the Palau Maricel built in Sitges near Barcelona. The artist Miquel Utrillo i Morlius contributed to it. A second, neighboring building was also acquired by Deering. The Museu Maricel is located there today . Deering's winter residence in Miami , Florida is now also a museum and nature reserve. It is located in the neighborhood of the Villa Vizcaya of his half-brother James Deering (1859-1925).

1930–33 the Deering Library of Northwestern University in Evanston (Illinois) was built with donations from the family .
