The ruins of Teschen Castle (Polish: Zamek w Cieszynie ) are located in Cieszyn in the powiat Cieszyński in the Silesian Voivodeship in Poland . The hilltop castle is located in the foothills of the Silesian Beskidens on the right bank of the Olsa on a castle hill.

history

There was already a Slavic fortress on the castle hill in the 9th century. In the 10th century Cieszyn came to the Piast- ruled Poland . The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1155. The castle was expanded after the founding of the Duchy of Teschen in the 13th century. In the 16th century the castle was transformed into a Renaissance castle of the Silesian Piasts . It was damaged during the Thirty Years War and finally destroyed by Swedish troops in 1646. After 1659 large parts of the castle were demolished.
