The Habsburg Hunting Lodge ( Polish : Pałac Myśliwski Habsburgów ) is located in Cieszyn in the powiat Cieszyński in the Polish Voivodeship of Silesia . The classicist castle is located in the foothills of the Silesian Beskids on the right bank of the Olsa on the Teschen Castle Hill .

history

There was a Slavic fortification on the castle hill as early as the 9th century . The castle Cieszyn was founded by the Cieszyn Duchy expanded in the 13th century. In the 16th century the castle was transformed into a Renaissance castle of the Silesian Piasts . It was damaged during the Thirty Years War and finally destroyed by Swedish troops in 1646. Karl Habsburg had most of the ruins of the upper castle removed and an English park built in its place . He had the ruins of the lower castle converted into a hunting lodge by Joseph Kornhäusel in the classical style . He also built the Cieszyn Castle Brewery . The castle became the seat of the Teschen Chamber . Franz Liszt gave a concert there in 1846, and Eugen von Habsburg had Wagner's operas performed there. Emperor Franz Joseph was a guest in the palace in 1880, 1890 and 1906. After the outbreak of the First World War, Friedrich von Habsburg became general of the Austro-Hungarian army and the building was the seat of the Army High Command from 1914 to 1917. During this time, Emperors Karl I , Kaiser Wilhelm II , King Ferdinand I and Paul von Hindenburg were closed Guest. The last major meeting of the Axis monarchs in the castle took place in December 1916. In the last days of the war the National Council of the Duchy of Teschen took place there, which campaigned for the annexation of the Duchy to the Second Polish Republic . The castle has been home to the Ignacy Paderewski Music School since 1947 .
