The ruins of the castle Vikštejn (German castle Wigstein ) is located in the municipality of Vítkov in Okres Opava in the Moravian-Silesian region in the Czech Republic. It is located 20 kilometers southwest of Opava .

history

Vikštejn Castle is located on a rock above the Mohra . It was supposed to monitor the way to Opava and was probably built in the second half of the 13th century together with Wigstadtl by Witek von Krawarn ( Vítek z Kravař ). It was first mentioned in a document in 1377 when the Duchy of Opava was divided . In 1461 Duke Ernst von Troppau handed over the castle to the Budiwoj von Morawitz ( Budivoj z Moravice ). Five years later it was confiscated by the Bohemian King George of Podebrady and given to his captain Heinrich Birka von Nassiedel ( Hynek Bírka z Násíle ). During the Bohemian-Hungarian War the Vikštejn Castle was destroyed by Matthias Corvinus in 1474 . Under Jan Plankner von Kinsberg ( Planknarové z Kynšperka ) it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style from 1525 . From the end of the 16th century it was owned by the Oderský of Liderau ( Oderský z Lidéřova ). During the Thirty Years War, the castle was damaged by the Danes under General Mansfeld in 1626 and destroyed by the imperial family in 1646 . After a restoration in the second half of the 17th century, it served economic purposes under the new owner Franz Karl Wipplar von Uschütz. After 1776 it was abandoned and left to decay.
