Walternienburg Castle

The castle Walternienburg is a small castle on the Nuthe near Zerbst in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt . Medieval buildings are the keep and probably parts of the curtain wall . The former wall - ditch system is easy to see.

history

In connection with the donation of the trade and honey tithe to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, the Walthernienburg was first mentioned in a document in 973 as "nigenburg". A year later, the district (“pagus”) “nigenburg” came to the Quedlinburg monastery . Its abbess enfeoffed the Lords of Arnstein with it.

It has not yet been clarified whether the castle was an early German fortification similar to that in Loburg or an older Slavic castle. After the complex had lost its strategic importance as a border castle, it served as the administrative center. The Counts of Arnstein-Barby served as governors of the Quedlinburg monastery .

The keep, which is still preserved today, was built in the 14th century. It had a wall thickness of 3.5 meters, and its interior was two by two meters. In 1359, the suffix "Walter-" appeared for the first time, possibly going back to Count Walter II von Arnstein-Barby. After the Barby counts died out, the Walternienburg office was administered by the Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst in 1659 .

Major renovations took place in the second half of the 18th century, the results of which shaped the appearance of the castle into the 20th century. From 1815 Walternienburg was in Prussian possession.

After the Second World War , the castle was only used for residential purposes and increasingly fell into disrepair. When there was no longer any use after 1973, the castle buildings were demolished in 1988.
