Werle Castle

The Burg Werle (Orle, Wurle) is a former castle near the Kassower district Werle, northwest of the city Güstrow near the Warnow . At this point there is now an artificially raised hill with a granite boulder that has been there since 1856 and weighs about 6 tons .

history

It was once the seat of government of the Princes of Werle and was built by Slavs living here around the year 600 and was probably abandoned in the 13th century. The castle, which was difficult to take, was fought over during the German colonization in the east and was besieged and taken several times. Henry the Lion is said to have captured the castle by ruse in 1160 and killed the Slav prince Niklot in the process. His sons Pribislaw I and Wertislaw got the castle back, but had to give it up again in 1163. In the winter of 1163, when Henry the Lion carried out a criminal campaign against the brothers, Wertislaw was captured by the Duke while defending Werle Castle. After a successful peace agreement, the castle finally went to Pribislaw I.
