Aydos Castle

The castle of Aydos (Turkish Aydos Kalesi ) is the ruin of a hilltop castle . The 537 m high Aydos Hill , the highest point in Istanbul , was chosen as the castle location . Aydos is the Turkish form of the Byzantine name Aetos ( Greek  ἀετός , German eagle ).

history

The castle was built in the late 13th century under Byzantine rule . At that time it was the administrative center from today's Üsküdar to Gebze and served mainly to monitor the border between Constantinople and İzmit and the coastal road from Üsküdar via Samandıra to Izmit. Around 1328 the Ottomans under Orhan Gazi conquered the region around Pendik and Sultanbeyli with the capture of the castle of Aydos and the palace of Damatrys . The castle was mainly of dry stone and limestone built. It is elliptical , about 120 m long and the widest point measures 50 m. There is also a 12 m long and 7.5 m wide cistern in the fortress . The cistern is a magnet for tourists as many different fish swim there today.

It is believed that the excavated castle is just a small part of a larger complex. The earlier great fires destroyed the castle so much that only six towers and the entrances and exits to two secret passages in the west of the castle have been preserved. The foundation of the approximately 100 m high observation tower has also been preserved.
