Burghard Schmanck (born November 6, 1938 - † October 8, 2019 ) was a German politician .

Life

From October 24, 1999 to December 26, 1999, Schmanck was state chairman of the REP in North Rhine-Westphalia . He was also a long-time member of the party's federal executive committee and chairman of the Republican Federation of Public Employees (RepBB). Schmanck is a retired teacher .

In 1996 Burghard Schmanck was elected federal chairman of the RepBB and the federal executive committee of his party. On October 24, 1999, he was elected regional chairman of the REP NRW and thus the successor of Ursula Winkelsett with a majority of only 10 votes . Winkelsett did not accept the defeat and tried to regain their leading position in the national association. Against Schmanck's will, the majority of the state board wanted to commission Winkelsett to lead the election campaign for the North Rhine-Westphalian state elections in 2000. Just two months after his election, on December 27, 1999, Schmanck resigned from all his offices and left the party.

He himself justified this step with the fact that Winkelsett and other leading functionaries had contact with well-known right-wing extremists such as Professor Dr. Klaus Sojka from DVU and Harald Neubauer from DLVH . In November and December 1999, at the invitation of Winkelsett, there was open cooperation with DVU members in Schleswig-Holstein : they were invited to formally join the REP and thus ensure the quorum of a state members' meeting. According to Schmanck, this contradicts the Ruhstorf decision (cf. The Republicans # Relationship with right-wing extremist parties and associations ). On the other hand, it was precisely with this occurrence that he justified the fact that he had not initiated a party exclusion procedure against REP members who had run for candidates on an NPD list.
