The Grimmenstein castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle above St. Margrethen in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen . It is a cultural asset of regional importance .

history

The castle was built before the middle of the 13th century at the suggestion of St. Gallen abbot Berchtold von Falkenstein . It then changed hands several times. In the 14th century the castle was used by robber knights as a residence. In 1416 it was razed and never rebuilt. The ruin was later used as a quarry. Only the remains of a residential tower , a cistern and wall remains of other buildings are preserved.
