The Steinerberg castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle at 537  m above sea level. A. in the Unteredt district of the Altenfelden community in the Rohrbach district of Upper Austria . The remains of this castle complex are near the Turmbauer farmhouse (Steinerberg 8).

history

The Kirchbergers are named as the first owners of Steinerberg. An ulricus de Chrichperch is mentioned here around 1195. Carl von Kirchberg sold his fiefdom to the Tannberger in 1263 . The Steinerbergers who lived here in the 13th century were also servants (so-called "single-shield knights") of the Tannberger. Ulricus de Stainaperg is mentioned in 1279, Gottfried von Steinaperg is mentioned in 1303, a Seibot from Stainaberg is also documented in 1309. After the death of their liege lord Kunrad von Tannberg († 1356), the Steinerbergers began to sell their property and migrate. In 1362 they sold their ancestral castle to Gundacker von Tannberg zu Pürnstein . The last detectable Steinerberger was Andreas Steinerperger, who was Schallenberger's servant in 1415 . He was married to Dorothea Steinaperg, the widow of Erhard von Schallenberg. The last of the Steinerberger was probably Wolfgang Steinaperg.

The castle is located on a rocky hill that drops steeply on three sides. It was around 40 m long and 15 m wide and was once protected by surrounding ditches . In front of the entrance on the west side there was a bailey (possibly a tower with two meter thick walls) with a drawbridge . Today there are still upright remains of the wall that have been gradually removed by the landowner in recent years. A ditch in the neck can still be seen.

A so-called earth stable from the 12th century was discovered near the castle , which is presumably related to the castle.
