The Burgstall Schomberg is a lost castle in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains . It is located in the urban area of Bad Schandau in the Saxon district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains on the Schandauer Schlossberg (or, as dialect forms of Schönberg, Schomberg , formerly also Schoumberg or Schömberg). The original castle complex probably dates from the 13th century. The artificially created castle ruin Schomberg , which was inaugurated in 1883, is located in its grounds .

Geographical location

The Burgstall Schomberg is located in the urban area of Bad Schandau on the wooded Schandauer Schlossberg ( 222.3  m above sea  level ), a southern mountain spur of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The spur rises about 300 m north of the city center. To the north-northeast, the landscape leads over another elevation to the Wustmanndörfel , which belongs to Sebnitz . The Kirnitzsch flows past to the east and another stream to the west, both of which run through the city center and then flow directly into the Elbe .

Parts of the Saxon Switzerland landscape protection area ( CDDA no. 11800; designated in 1990; 287.44  km² in size) lie on the spur .

history

Surname

The names Schomberg, Schönnbergk, Schamberg and Schaumberg can also be documented for the survey. He is recorded as Schoumberg on a map by the topographer Merian from the second half of the 17th century . The origin of the name is controversial, a derivation of the Middle High German schouwen (= to look) is suspected , which could indicate the use of the mountain as "Schauinsland", which means signal control room. Occasionally, the term Kiefericht is used for the plateau of the Schlossberg.

General

The system was probably built in the 13th century as an electricity and road control room to secure the movement of goods on the Elbe and the Via Regia , a former trade route. Until it was destroyed, it was the only power station owned by the Bohemian aristocratic family Berka von Dubá, who lived in Hohnstein Castle . Ceramic finds prove that the Schlossberg was settled in the 14th century at the latest. Archaeological research unearthed lance tips , crossbow bolts , grindstones and a stone flour mill , among other things . There were also numerous horseshoes and spurs , which indicates a crew with mounted men. The village of Altendorf was one of the accessories of the Schomberg, and in 1445 the von Borsko family as followers of the Berka von Dubá can be traced. It was very likely that it was the former lords of the Schomberg castle, as Altendorf itself was never the seat of a manor. Traces of fire suggest that the castle guard was destroyed in the Hussite Wars in the years 1419 to 1434 or 1439. The finds from the Schlossberg are now in the Bad Schandau Local History Museum.

The Schomberg is mentioned repeatedly in files from the 17th century. In 1629, for example, a cottage owner from Zauke (today a district of Rathmannsdorf ) complained that a planned new building on the "Schönnbergk" would rob him of the air and light in his house.

Burgstall

The original layout of the castle stables consisted of a small building, probably a wooden block house. There was also a cuboid-like room carved into a rock ledge in the southwest, which was closed off by a wall on the valley side and probably served as a guardroom. The total area of the castle plateau is an irregular square of about 20 m × 45 m. And is about five to seven meters higher than the upper moat. The castle plateau was surrounded by a wreath and palisade and secured by a double wall. The castle's crew probably consisted of about ten men. A model of the fortification of the Schomberg can be seen in the Bad Schandau local history museum. Today, in addition to a few remains of the wall, only the double castle wall, a moat and the cistern are preserved.

The preserved, partly bricked, partly carved round cistern is now filled in, but is said to have been 15 cubits (8.5 m) deep around the middle of the 19th century.

The complex is protected as a prehistoric ground monument .

Schomberg castle ruins

Late 19th century was built an artificial castle ruins on the site of a builder Dachsel that both castle ruins Schomberg as well as castle ruins Schomberg is known. It was inaugurated on June 24, 1883 by members of the German Alpine Club , Section Bad Schandau. Remnants of the wall of the original castle were integrated into the building.

On the tower of the ruin there is a viewing platform that can be climbed via a stone staircase outside the tower secured with metal railings and an adjoining spiral staircase inside the tower. Due to the surrounding forest, the platform offers a limited view of Bad Schandau and the Elbe valley. When the tower was being built, a dam with steps running through the middle of the castle was raised.

The mountain association for Saxon Switzerland called the ruin Frienstein at the inauguration . But after the front robbery castle was unequivocally identified as Frienstein, the local group decided in 1906 not to use this name any more.

Schandauer Schlossberg with the Schlossbastei restaurant around 1900

Castle Bastion

A little below the castle plateau, on the southeast corner of the castle hill, the excursion restaurant "Schlossbastei" was located until 1979. In 1857 a lookout point was built on a small plateau, previously called "Auf der Wand" or "auf der Steinwand" around 1840. In July 1861, the Schandau master carpenter opened the “Schlossbastei” restaurant here with his daughter. The building, which was expanded several times, also known as the "Bad Schandau balcony" because of its location, served from then on as a dance and excursion venue and also offered several guest rooms. In the 1970s, the restaurant last operated by the GDR trade organization (HO) was closed due to dilapidation and demolished in 1979. The two-level terrace that is now used as a viewing point has been preserved.
