The castle complex is seen as the immediate forerunner of the town of Rathenow. The remains of the castle ramparts are located about 80 meters west of the Havel River southwest of the town of Rathenow in a drained lowland, which was previously a marshy wetland. The field name is "Alt Rathenow" or "Alte Hofstelle". The Burgstall is oval . In the north-south extension it has a diameter of 100 meters, in the east-west extension it is 80 meters. It is believed that the facility dates from the 11th century, i.e. the High Middle Ages , and was built at a ford . A Slavic settlement was on the opposite eastern bank of the Havel.

The castle was first described and discovered in 1929. Slavic ceramics and a spindle whorl were found. The material found was dated to the second half of the 12th century. Archaeological finds on the adjoining areas indicate early German settlement in the 12th and 13th centuries, with the finds being found scattered over several hectares . So far, four farms could be distinguished.

The gate system was in the north of the castle. This could be reached via a ramp about 120 meters long coming from the south in a clockwise direction . At least two water-filled moats enclosed the castle. The outer moat separated the castle to the west from an adjacent sand area on which an early German settlement is proven. It is believed that a church could have stood on a small sandy hill . The complex was probably abandoned in the 13th century after the settlement focus of the old town Rathenow had formed about two kilometers further north. The entire system was badly damaged in the 19th and 20th centuries by agriculture and building dykes . There is a footpath and bicycle path directly through the complex .
