Burkard I. (Ebrach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Burkard I (also Burkhard I ; † May 15 after 1187) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1182 to 1187 .

Life

Very little is known about the life of Burkard I. He was born at the beginning of the 12th century, but the sources are silent about the place. The parents and any siblings of the future abbot are also not mentioned. Burkard probably entered the Ebrach monastery under the first abbot Adam . Here he rose quickly within the monastery community and after the death of Konrad became the fourth abbot of the Cistercian monastery.

Burkard was first mentioned in 1182, however, when Pope Lucius III approved . some privileges to the monastery. In addition, the monks received their curia in Oberschwappach . The events of the year 1185 are controversial in science: Gerlach I. von Rein, sponsor of the Lilienfeld monastery in what is now Lower Austria, asked the Abbot of Ebrach to renew his foundation. Abbot Burkard then sent the monk Heinrich with twelve of his confreres to the south.

In a second papal document, this time from 1187, Pope Gregory VIII confirmed the privileges granted by his predecessor and added others. At that time Burkard still ruled as abbot in Ebrach. He died on May 15th, according to a prayer book. The year of his death is controversial, however, and is usually given with the car after 1187. His successor Hermann is mentioned for the first time in 1194.
