Burtnieki (German Burtneck ) is a village in northern Latvia on the south bank of Lake Burtnieki and the center of the administrative district of the same name.
history
A Burtneck castle was first mentioned in writing in 1357 and was the subject of a dispute between the bishop of Riga and the Livonian order for many years . Today's village was built around an estate (Burtneek) which was handed over to Axel Oxenstierna in 1622 . In the 19th century the remains of the castle wall were torn down.
Burtnieku novads
In 2006 the municipalities of Vecate and Matisi merged. In 2009 the rural communities of Burtnieki, Ēvele, Rencēni and Valmiera were added (see also: Administrative division of Latvia )
