The Esenler bus station , Turkish Esenler Otogar , also known as Uluslararası İstanbul Otogarı ("Istanbul International Bus Station"), İstanbul Şehirlerarası Otobüs Terminalı ("Istanbul Intercity Bus Station"), Büyük İstanbul Otogarı ("Istanbul Big Bus Station") or simply Otogar is known the largest bus station ( otogar ) in Turkey and thus one of the most important transport hubs in the country and Southeast Europe. The 242,000 m² area used by the bus station is located in the European part of the metropolis of Istanbul in the Bayrampaşa district, near the Esenler district that gives it its name .

From here long-distance buses run to practically all parts of the country. At the international level, there are regular bus connections to the countries of Southeast Europe as well as to many countries in Central Europe and the Middle East . The busiest route leads to the Turkish capital Ankara, 450 km away . Buses there leave the bus station around the clock, around every quarter of an hour. The Esenler bus station opened in May 1994. On a floor space of 290,000 m² on several levels, there is space for 100 parking spaces for buses and 450–500 for other vehicles, 168 bus platforms and a similar number of ticket offices and 2000 offices. At the bus station there are 15,000 bus movements per day, i.e. arrivals and departures, with a capacity of 600,000 travelers. Between 3,000 and 5,000 people are employed at the bus station, and up to a million people pass through this transport hub every day.

There are also workshops, shops, restaurants, a police station, an infirmary and a mosque.

Connection

Downtown Istanbul and many parts of the city can be reached from the bus station using the M1A metro line of the Istanbul Metro as well as city buses, shuttles operated by bus companies, other shuttle buses and taxis. The bus station is also connected to Ataturk Airport by the same metro line. The Esenler district is - and other districts to the west will be connected from 2013 - to the M1B underground line .

Many of the long-distance buses going from here to Anatolia also stop at the smaller Harem bus station in the Asian part of Istanbul.
