Bussa was a city in western Nigeria and has been inundated by the Kainji reservoir since 1968 . Bussa was the capital of the north of Borgu . The city was on the Niger , near rapids that restricted the navigability of the Niger for larger ships.

history

On his second expedition through Africa, the British African explorer Mungo Park drove along the Niger to Bussa, where he was killed in 1806, probably in a fight with local people. From 1894 to 1898 Bussa was the subject of a territorial dispute between Great Britain and France ; the city finally went to Great Britain in June 1898.

Flooding and relocation

The construction of the Kainji Dam from 1964 to 1968 required the relocation of approximately 42,000 people, which began in 1962. In the area of today's Kainji Reservoir there were 192 settlements, 121 of which were newly built in higher areas. Bussa was built further south as New Bussa .
