Buzzard (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The buzzard or the buses was one of the nine regionally used barrel types in France. Its volume corresponded roughly to that of the barrique . It was used in Anjou , Mayenne , Sarthe and Poitou for the storage of eau de vie and wine .

The volume of a buzzard fluctuated. 1 buzzard corresponded to:

  • 32 to 35 Velte so about 243 to 266  l in Anjou (1840)
  • 30.5 Velte in Saumur which corresponds to 232.09 l (1840)

The work Nouveau manuel complet du tonnelier et du jaugeage, contenant la fabrication des tonneaux from 1875, however, differentiates between buzzards and buses according to size and indicates the size of the buzzard as 350 l, while the buses of Cognac and Saumur are significantly smaller (210 and 232 l ). There the Anjou buzzard is given as 251 l but is referred to as buses.

1 buzzard also corresponded to 216 Parisian pints (1809).

The volume of the buzzard was half the pipe and in Orleans , Blois and Dijon it was about half a cue , that was ¾ of the muids .
