Rainville was an officer in France and served as an adjutant to General Charles-François Dumouriez . He fled from the unrest of the French Revolution and came to Altona in 1794, which at that time belonged to the national territory of Denmark and where there was extensive freedom of belief and trade. Rainville married Jeanne Janin (1769-1851) from Verdun in 1796 , with whom he had three children. After the end of the revolution he did not return to France, but stayed in Altona and worked in the restaurant business, although he was not trained in this field.

He managed various hotels and restaurants, which he gave a special French character. In 1798 he leased a country house on the Elbe slope in Ottensen, which Christian Frederik Hansen had built in 1794 for the merchant and envoy of the Batavian Republic, Balthasar Elias Abbema. Rainville bought the property in 1799. The establishment was conveniently located near the road to Blankenese and, in addition to the guest rooms, offered a furnished terrace with a view of the garden and the Elbe valley . "Rainville" was named as a major attraction in travel guides of the 19th century. In addition to closed events, such as official dinners and state receptions, Rainville organized public garden parties based on the French model for wealthy guests. His events were characterized by a special exclusivity and he was called the "god of innkeepers".

After Rainville's death and the death of his wife in 1851, the restaurateurs who followed were unable to build on their past successes. The country house was demolished in 1867. The street Rainvilleterrasse in Hamburg-Ottensen has been reminiscent of Rainville and its restaurant since 1884. The Altona Museum received in 1960 and 1978, some pieces from the estate of Rainsville, including painted on ivory portrait miniatures by him and his wife and Rain Villes lieutenant's commission.
