Bärbel Hedinger

Bärbel Hedinger (born November 20, 1940 in Danzig ) is a German art historian and curator. She is the former director of the Altona Museum in Hamburg .

Live and act

Hedinger first studied economics in Münster , Heidelberg , Marburg and Hamburg and graduated with a diploma. She then worked in this profession for a few years, but in 1977 she decided to study art history at the University of Hamburg with Martin Warnke and Horst Bredekamp , where she received her doctorate in 1983 with an investigation into the cultural and political function of wall maps in Dutch interior paintings. She then went on to work as a volunteer at the Altona Museum / North German State Museum in Hamburg, where she was soon appointed head of the painting and graphics department and, from 2001, the Jenisch House / Museum for Art and Culture on the Elbe as a branch of the Altona Museum responsibly managed and reorganized. In 2004 she was appointed director of the Altona Museum to work out a fundamental reorientation of the house. From 2007, following her museum career, Hedinger turned to work as a freelance curator and author. Among other things, she designed exhibitions for the Bucerius Kunst Forum in Hamburg and the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation in Potsdam. She lives in Berlin, married to the art historian Michael Diers .

She realized numerous exhibitions in Hamburg and outside the Hanseatic city. In addition to monographic shows on northern German artists of the 19th century ( Hermann Kauffmann , Louis Gurlitt ) and on contemporary art and current photography, the art and cultural history exhibitions stand out. Including exhibitions on architecture, garden and interior design ( Franz Gustav Forsmann , CF Hansen , Karl Friedrich Schinkel or Joseph Ramée ), on game and artist postcards, on bathing life (the beach season) , on fashion (bride fashion show ; Luise. The clothes the Queen) , on the art of cloud representation (cloud images) and the trompe l'oeil (deceptively real) or on the history of technically supported perception and image production (curiosity, optical theater & other spectacles - the Werner Nekes collection ) . A major study of Max Liebermann's art collection was published in 2013 and a first comprehensive publication on the work of the artist Mary Warburg (1866–1934) is currently in preparation.
