Cölestin Pestaluz OSB (born October 28, 1608 in Vienna ; † February 7, 1678 in Steyr ) was a Benedictine and abbot of Gleink Abbey .

Life

Pestaluz came from a Viennese aristocratic family and was born in Vienna on October 28, 1608. In the first years of his youth he studied human sciences and was at the same time in the service of Prince-Bishop Anton Wolfradt , abbot of Kremsmünster Abbey , which he later entered and made his profession on March 25, 1637 . He was ordained a priest on February 2, 1643.

He was sent to Salzburg for higher studies, where he later taught theology and philosophy himself. Then he was appointed administrator, prior and pastor in Thalheim .

Because the death of August Kausler required a new abbot for the Gleink monastery, Cölestin Pestaluz was appointed to head the monastery. So that he would not go to the monastery empty-handed, which was already financially exhausted at the time, he brought with him the savings in the parish of Thalheim.

Under him the great baroque construction period began for Gleink, which ended under his successor Abbot Rupert II. Above all, he drove the restoration of the collegiate church, which was given the character of today.

Before he was 62 and before he was 20 in office, he suffered a stroke. He finally died on February 7, 1678. He was buried in the church of the monastery in front of the altar.
