Caesar Adolf Schmalz (born February 11, 1887 in Staldendorf , Konolfingen municipality ; † November 21, 1966 in Heimberg BE ) was a Swiss draftsman, ceramist, potter, sculptor and painter. He created mosaics and sgraffiti on public buildings. As a heraldist he was a co-designer of the community coats of arms of Heimberg and Konolfingen; the first flag of the federal yodelling association goes back to him. He also created illustrations for club anniversaries and in books and music books for the yodelling movement.

Life

After finishing school at the Grosshöchstetten secondary school, Caesar Adolf Schmalz completed a three-year apprenticeship as a “commercial draftsman” at the Cantonal Trade Museum in Bern under Paul Wyss, with additional pottery courses. He did work in various pottery shops in the Steffisburg - Heimberg area, and his work was awarded prizes in competitions.

In 1908/1909 he was on a state scholarship to travel to southern France, Madrid, Barcelona and Paris. He studied in the Prado and worked in factories in Barcelona and Paris (Lachenal). He had meetings with and commissioned work for Auguste Rodin .

In 1921 he bought the small “Rebli” farmhouse over the Aare in Heimberg. He worked as a small farmer, potter and sculptor (plates / plates / trophies for clubs, small sculptures) to earn a living. 1931 and 1932 worked as a teacher at the Ecole suisse de Céramique  in Lausanne. He gave modeling courses at the community college. He also pursued a job as a restorer at the Thun Castle Museum . From 1932 to 1935 Schmalz was a member of the "Free Group of Bernese Painters and Sculptors".

During his work as an art ceramist, Schmalz carried out all the steps from the extraction of clay from his own property to the finished workpiece himself. He experimented with different clay mixes. Ceramic paintings depicting current or historical events are predominant. These replace the traditional, mostly ornamental painting by decorators (painters) in the Heimberg pottery.
