The CVE VT 8-9 were narrow gauge engine - railcars of Luxembourg Schmalspurbahnen ( Chemins de Fer à Voie Etroite (CVE)). They were converted from passenger cars and were in operation until 1956. Colloquially, the vehicles were also classified as class D multiple units by the CVE .

History and technical data

The history of the railcars began in 1936 when they were procured as two trailer cars for the VT 5-7 . However, their performance prevented operation on the steep slopes of the CVE. On July 11, 1938, the official test drive with the vehicles took place on the narrow-gauge railway Luxembourg – Echternach . After the second railcar was also delivered, traffic on the Echternach Vizinalbahn was expanded significantly. From October 2, 1938 on, five pairs of trains ran daily, only one pair of trains with steam locomotives was planned.

In the first year of operation, one of the two railcars was involved in an accident when the vehicle fell on a fallen beech tree in a heavy storm, dragged it along for a few meters and overturned in the process. Both vehicles came into the inventory of the Deutsche Reichsbahn after 1942 and were designated as VT 136 757-758 . Both cars were rebuilt again, which particularly affected the cooling system. The CVE VT 9 was badly damaged in an air raid in August 1944 and was retired in the same year by the then Reichsbahndirektion Saarbrücken . The remaining car came to the CFL after the end of the war and was designated there as the Z 6 . The vehicle was taken out of service in the summer of 1956.

Vehicle body

Machinery of the CVE VT 8–9

The two passenger cars manufactured in 1936 had a length of 12,500 mm and a weight of 13,700 kg when they were completed. At an unknown factory in Germany, the vehicles were cut in the middle and lengthened by 1,800 mm. With this extension, the capacity of the car was increased by 17%.

In addition, the machine system, consisting of the eight-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine Deutz A8M 517, which worked according to the pre-chamber method , and a Mylius gear , in which the reversing gear was integrated in the housing, was installed in a separate machine support frame in the enlarged car , this was hung on the frame of the car body with strong rubber buffers. Power was transmitted to all drive axles via cardan shafts. The diesel engine was water-cooled by means of a circulation cooling system, the radiator being stored under the floor. The car body was heated by fresh air and warmed by the exhaust gases from the diesel engine. The vehicles had an electrical system of 24 V DC .
