The CITIC Plaza (or Sky Central Plaza ) is a skyscraper in the Chinese city of Guangzhou . At 391 meters, the 80-story building is one of the tallest in the country and the third tallest in the city. From its completion in 1997 to 2010, it was the tallest building in the city, but was then surpassed by the 437-meter-high Guangzhou International Finance Center .
The building is the headquarters of the CITIC Group , which gives the high-rise its name. When it opened in 1997, it was the fourth tallest building in the world after the Willis Tower and the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and is still one of the 25 tallest skyscrapers . Its official height of 391 meters is achieved through the metal spikes on the roof. The building measures 322 meters to the roof. The responsible architectural office DLN Architects & Engineers designed a straight, slim structure made of reinforced concrete with a glass facade, which is why it also held the record as the tallest reinforced concrete skyscraper until the Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago was completed in 2009 (423 meters).
The skyscraper forms the focal point of a large district, which has been almost completely rebuilt since 1995 - TianHe District - with parks, gardens, sports stadiums and amusement centers. The CITIC Plaza is also surrounded by two associated apartment buildings and the Sky Galleria shopping center.
