CKE Restaurants Holdings, Inc. is a US holding company headquartered in Carpinteria , California , that owns several fast food chains, including Carl's Jr. and Hardee’s . It is represented with its chains in 44 of the 50 US states as well as in 38 other countries and US territories . The holding's turnover in the 2012 financial year was 1.28 billion US dollars . From 2010 to 2013, CKE was owned by the Apollo investment company . Since then, it has belonged to the Roark Capital Group , which also holds the majority of shares in the fast-food chains Arby’s , Wingstop, Naf Naf Grill, Corner Bakery Cafe, Miller's Ale House, Il Fornaio, Jimmy John’s and the Focus Brands group (Auntie Anne's, Carvel, Cinnabon , McAlister's Deli, Moe's Southwest Grill, Schlotzsky's ).

Andrew Puzder , who was nominated as Minister of Labor  in  the Trump Cabinet , has been President and CEO since September 2000 .

The holding company was founded in 1966, with the abbreviation CKE standing for Carl Karcher Enterprises, Inc. The Carl's Jr. brand , which has been in use since 1956, grew rapidly: in 1966 there were 24 restaurants and in 1981 there were 300. They were all in California, and expansion did not begin until 1982 in other states. The much larger chain Hardee’s with 2,500 restaurants at the time was taken over in 1997.

The founder Carl Karcher (1917-2008) was a conservative Catholic who had twelve children with his wife Margret (1915-2006). He supported initiatives against the right to abortion and against homosexual teachers. In 1993 he was voted out of office as CEO of the company he founded.
