On February 15, 2017, the day before the relevant vote in the US Senate , Puzder announced his retirement due to increasing opposition to him in the hearings for his nomination . In his place, Trump has now nominated Alexander Acosta , u. A. under George W. Bush Assistant Attorney General in the Justice Department .

career

education

Puzder is the son of Winifred M. (Franklin) and Andrew Frank Puzder. He grew up in Russell Township , Geauga County , Ohio . He attended Kent State University , which he left in 1970 to pursue a career as a rock musician. When Puzder lived in Cleveland Heights , Ohio, he worked in the sale of a guitar business and attended Cleveland State University , where he received his bachelor's degree in history in 1975 . He then attended Washington University School of Law , where he was editor of the Law Review and where he received his Juris Doctor in 1978 .

Professional career

From 1978 to 1983, Puzder was a partner in Morris Shenker 's law firm in St. Louis. In 1984 he moved to Stolar Partnership in St. Louis and worked with criminal defense attorney Charles A. Seigel .

While practicing law in St. Louis, he wrote an abortion law for the state of Missouri, which was amended by the 1989 Webster v. Reproductive Health Services has been stopped by the United States Supreme Court . Following the Webster decision, Puzder became a founding member of the Common Ground Network for Life and Choice. In 1984, Puzder and another attorney had written an article for the Stetson Law Journal proposing law for Missouri that would save life at conception.

While working as a lawyer in St. Louis, Puzder met Carl Karcher , the founder of the fast-food chain Carl's Jr. Karcher was in great trouble and asked Puzder to move to California as his personal attorney. In 1991 Puzder moved to Orange County, California. Puzder was able to solve Karcher's financial problems, prevent the company from going bankrupt, and retain a significant stake in the company he founded, CKE Restaurants, Inc. (CKE).

Puzder resolved Karcher's financial problems by finalizing a transaction with William P. Foley, executive director of Fidelity National Financial . In 1994, Foley became chairman and chief executive officer of CKE, and Karcher resigned as chairman. In 1995, Puzder became executive vice president and general counsel for Fidelity and headed one of the largest legal departments in a California corporation. He also worked with Foley to create the Santa Barbara Restaurant Group , a conglomerate of restaurant chains. Puzder was the managing director of this company.

1997 Puzder was appointed Executive Vice President and General Counsel appointed by CKE. In the same year, CKE acquired Hardee's Food Systems, Inc. , which owns the Hardee's fast-food brand. Hardee's was a distressed brand, with CKE taking over $ 700 million in debt with the acquisition. Business was bad and capitalization fell to around $ 200,000. In June 2000, due to organizational and financial problems, the Board of Directors of CKE appointed Puzder President and CEO of Hardee's Food Systems and in September 2000 President and CEO of CKE Restaurants, Inc. Puzder has restructured both Hardee's and CKE brands and again brought on a growth path.

92% of CKE restaurants are now owned by franchisees . The US Department of Labor, which Puzder was supposed to lead, has long pursued the intention of holding franchise companies as joint entrepreneurs with their franchisees liable for compliance with labor standards. As a board member of the International Franchise Association , a lobbying group of franchise companies, Puzder had vehemently opposed this intention. According to a study by Bloomberg BNA, the Ministry of Labor found violations of labor law in random samples in 60% of all CKE restaurants examined, which puts Puzder in a comparatively good position among the examined franchise companies: the average of the legal violations identified was 75%.

In July 2010, took over private equity -Gesellschaft Apollo Global Management , the company CKE for 1 billion US dollars. In December 2013, the Roark Capital Group bought CKE again and left the CKE management including Puzder in office.

Honorary positions

In 2011, Puzder was appointed to the National Advisory Board of the Washington University School of Law . In 2013 he was elected Director of the International Franchise Association's Board of Directors . Puzder is a National Council Co-Chair of the American Enterprise Institute . Puzder is a member of the Job Creators Network , an organization that opposes government regulations on businesses.

Activities as an author, commentator and political commitment

Puzder frequently writes on business and legal topics in magazines such as the Wall Street Journal , Forbes , Real Clear Politics , CNBC online, National Review , The Hill , Politico, and the Orange County Register . He has appeared on business news programs such as Your World with Neil Cavuto , Varney & Co. , Mornings with Maria , The O'Reilly Factor with Bill O'Reilly , Mad Money with Jim Cramer , Fast Money , Power Lunch , Lou Dobbs Tonight and Squawk on the street . He has hosted both Varney & Co. and Squawk on the Street . He is a regular speaker at colleges, universities and other locales on business issues and the impact of government law on businesses.

Puzder is known as a critic of the minimum wage increases . In 2010 he was a co-author of Job Creation: How It Really Works and Why Government Doesn't Understand It .

In 2011, Puzder contributed to Believe in America, Mitt Romney's plan for job and economic growth. He was a business advisor and spokesperson for Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign. Puzder was also a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 2012 and chaired the subcommittee on business, job creation and debt. In 2016, Puzder raised funds for Donald Trump's presidential campaign . He was a spokesman and economic advisor to the campaign. Puzder was also a delegate to the 2016 Republican National Convention and chaired the subcommittee on economics, job creation and debt of the platform committee "Restoring the American Dream". On February 15, 2017, Puzder withdrew his candidacy as Minister of Labor. Puzder was against regulations in the labor market and against a minimum wage. Numerous lawsuits relating to non-payment of wages and sexual harassment were pending against his restaurant chain; because of this, and because of his more immigration-friendly attitude, several Republican senators wanted to refuse his approval. He himself had employed an immigrant as a housekeeper for years without an immigration permit. He was also confronted with the familiar allegations of domestic violence. Four votes against by Republican senators were considered certain. The votes of eight other Republican senators were uncertain.

With the nomination of Puzder, Trump defied an unwritten rule that Democrats and Republicans had adhered to when filling the Ministry of Labor: Democrats do not nominate a union leader , Republicans do not nominate a company boss .

PR News and CommCore Consulting named Puzder Spokesperson of the Year in 2005 for his work for the Carl's Jr. and Hardee's brands on television and radio.
