Planned route of the cable in the North Sea

COBRAcable is a planned high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission through the North Sea . It is scheduled to go into operation in 2019 and connect the Netherlands' electricity grid to the Danish grid. [obsolete] The project is being carried out by the two electricity grid operators Tennet and Energinet.dk .

The connection runs through the German Bight , the endpoints being Endrup near Esbjerg in Jutland, Denmark and Eemshaven in the Netherlands. The connection is operated with a DC voltage of 320  kV . The transmission capacity is 700  MW , the length of the cable is approx. 325 km.

One of the purposes of the construction is to link the electricity markets of Denmark and the Netherlands and to better integrate renewable energies into the energy system. In particular, the Netherlands should be able to import wind power from Denmark. The direct connection between Denmark and the Netherlands is also intended to reduce the load on the northern German power grid. There is also the option of connecting offshore wind farms in the North Sea to this submarine cable in the future .

The investment costs are a good 600 million euros. The project is funded by the European Commission as part of its energy program with a sum of 86.5 million euros. At the beginning of 2016, the operators awarded the contracts for the converter stations to Siemens AG , while the cables are to be supplied by the Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian .

The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), responsible for this area , issued the approval for the construction and operation of the submarine cable in the German Exclusive Economic Zone in December 2015.
