Collagen type XXI, alpha 1 is a fibrillenassoziiertes collagen that the gene COL21A1 is encoded. It forms homotrimers , which in turn form collagen fibrils of type XXI.

properties

Collagen type XXI, alpha 1 is an extracellular matrix component of the blood vessel wall that is produced by smooth muscle cells. The platelet-derived growth factor stimulates the expression of COL21A1 in cultured, aortic smooth muscle cells. Collagen XXI may contribute to the formation of the extracellular matrix of the vascular network during vasculogenesis .

In Drosophila melanogaster , the enzyme prolyl-4-hydroxylase trimerizes collagen XXI, which contains the intact C -terminal non-collagenous (NC1) and collagenous domains (COL1).
