CQ - Cologne Contemporary Ukulele Ensemble (2013)

The CQ - Cologne Contemporary Ukulele Ensemble was founded in 2013 in Cologne by the composer Albrecht Zummach . It is one of the few Ukulele - ensembles in Germany , which is new music dedicated.

history

After the ukulele increasingly in Germany has been popular since the late 1990s, the Cologne composer Albrecht dealt Zummach with the technical possibilities of the guitar-like plucked instrument and finally founded in 2013 with five like-minded people a ukulele ensemble for contemporary music (Engl. Contemporary music ) the so-called CQ - Cologne Contemporary Ukulele Ensemble. "C" stands for Cologne, the English name of the city of Cologne, while "Q" phonetically summarizes the following initial letters "CUE" .

The ensemble gave its debut concert in November 2013 in Kolumba , the art museum of the Archdiocese of Cologne, with the world premiere of Zummach's work Q’s for 5 ukuleles & bass kalimba . Comparable with the name of the ensemble, the title Q’s corresponds to the phonetic sound of the English plural “cues” (German, “inserts”, “keywords”, “trigger stimuli”) and indicates the structure of the piece: five ukuleles distributed in the room “send each other [ …] Similar to keywords in a theater scene ”to motifs, whereby the bass kalimba“ acts as a concise impulse generator ”. The sold out premiere of the ensemble met with approval from the public and critics; Among other things, Rainer Nonnenmann, co-editor of the specialist magazine MusikTexte , stated in his review in the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger a "magical surround sound experience [...] to delight the audience" and the music critic Egbert Hiller praised the newly founded ukulele ensemble and in the music journal of Deutschlandfunk whose premiere work a. a. as follows:

“The sound of the ukulele appeared in surprising contexts without denying its origins as a popular music instrument. And this approach is typical of the Cologne composer Albrecht Zummach, who repeatedly devotes himself to traditional or folk music repertoire in his work and elicits new perspectives from him on the dissecting table of his contemporary approach. In 'Q's' he explored the potential of the ukulele to extremes without any electronic sound alienation: from bizarre soundscapes to dream-lost spheres to bell-like sounds. The small instrument cast a spell over the audience with unusual tones. "

- Egbert Hiller : Deutschlandfunk , Musikjournal series of December 17, 2013

According to the ensemble's own statements, the “ideal performance venues for this composition” are the spacious and interlaced rooms of museums and art halls , where the audience sits in the middle and is encouraged to “prick up their ears in all directions”. The premiere was followed by several concerts in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), such as in May 2014 in the Klangbrücke in Aachen . In 2015, the ensemble also went on a “NRW Museum Tour” sponsored by the State Music Council and the Kunststiftung NRW with guest performances at the Kunsthaus Nordrhein-Westfalen Kornelimünster in Aachen, again at the Kolumba in Cologne and at the Kunsthalle Bielefeld .

In 2016 the ensemble continued the series of its museum concerts in North Rhine-Westphalia and gave guest performances in the Museum Schloss Moyland near Bedburg-Hau, in the Center for International Light Art in Unna and in the Märkisches Museum in Witten. The concerts were again funded by the Landesmusikrat and the Kunststiftung NRW.
