The CW 311 (also BB-Mercedes CW 311) is a super sports car study presented in 1978 by bb Auto Exclusiv Service KG from Frankfurt.

Successor model Isdera Imperator with Mercedes-Benz star

Development / production

Eberhard Schulz , then a developer at Porsche and later founder of the Isdera brand , had an idea of a successor to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL in the 1970s . He found the tuner Rainer Buchmann from bb Auto Exklusiv Service as a partner. Together they developed the CW 311, based on Mercedes-Benz and Porsche parts (the name was derived from the c w value of 0.311). The development time lasted from 1972 to 1978 and ended with the presentation of the prototype in 1978, which was presented to the public under the B + B trademark. They put the Mercedes-Benz star on the car without asking for permission from the manufacturer; In view of the great publicity, however, Daimler-Benz waived sanctions. This makes the CW 311 the only car developed outside of Daimler-Benz that is allowed to wear a star. The car also bore the large lettering B + B. It remained a fully roadworthy one-off, which received TÜV approval in 1978.

The vehicle can be seen in the movie Car-napping - ordered - stolen - delivered from 1980. Some film scenes were shot on the Salzburgring and were shot during the test drives , with Niki Lauda at the wheel, among others .

The later Isdera vehicles were built on the basis of this study. Some look very similar to the original and are often confused with the prototype by viewers. The whereabouts of the original is unknown. The vehicles built later were presented as the Isdera Imperator 108i from 1983 .

The CW 311 was painted white, with the pearlescent paint itself being a novelty from Merck . It was not until years later that the new pearlescent pigments were used in series production on a larger scale, so that the CW 311 was a pioneer in this field.

technology

The body of the CW 311 consists of glass fiber reinforced plastic on a tubular space frame .

The two developers chose a Mercedes-Benz M-100 engine from the Mercedes 600 that had been revised by AMG . The 6.3 liter eight-cylinder with a bore of 103 mm and a stroke of 95 was prepared in an output of 375 hp (276 kW) at 5200 rpm mm -1 brought and behind the seats installed. The engine had a torque of 580 Nm at a speed of 3000 min −1 . The tailpipes of the exhaust system ended in front of the left rear wheel.

The headlights of the car had covers painted in the same color as the car. In order to use the headlights, the covers had to be removed. They were later revised again and made from a material that, despite being painted in the same color as the car, was so translucent that the flasher could be operated with the covers closed. They still had to be removed for a night drive. The car was originally painted white with black B + B lettering.

The front hood was closed when the vehicle was parked. At the start of the journey, it lowered itself and enabled the radiator to ventilate. The air flowing through also ensured more downforce on the front axle. Only the prototype had this construction. It was no longer used in the later Isdera vehicles. The car had double doors, whereby the roof sections of the double doors were removable so that only the load-bearing parts remained.

The prototype CW-311 had a different wheelbase and was smaller than its Isdera successor. They were made longer or larger in order to create space so that different engines could be used in the future and also large occupants could comfortably find space.

Performance

Schulz's goal was to break the 300 km / h limit, which according to the builder succeeded. The stated top speed of 320 km / h was never confirmed. For the sprint to 100 km / h, the CW 311 took 4.8 seconds, and after 12.7 seconds a speed of 200 was reached.
