Cabedelo , officially Município de Cabedelo , is a city and a municipality (município) in the state of Paraíba , in Brazil . Cabedelo has an area of 31.42 km². The city has the only seaport in the state. The city is located on a peninsula in the immediate vicinity of the capital of the state of João Pessoa (Região Metropolitana). Cabedelo and its surroundings on the Rio Paraíba river are used as a recreational area by many of the capital's residents .
The climate is tropical and humid with temperatures of approx. 20 ° C to 35 ° C, a rainy season from April that ends in July. The vegetation is characterized by coconut palm plantations and sugar cane cultivation and there are mangrove forests in the river mouth. The district of Cabedelo includes the districts of Renascer, Poço and Intermares. The island of Ilha da Restinga is also part of Cabedelo. Here the Rio Paraíba flows into the South Atlantic. The IBGE estimated the population of Cabedelo in 2019 to be 67,736. However, the number of inhabitants in the summer is around 80,000 due to the growing summer house tourism in the city. During the carnival there are often more than 300,000 residents and guests in Cabedelo.
history
The city was founded in 1580, was called Margaretha at the time of the Dutch invasions in the 17th century and was elevated to Vila de Cabedelo on March 17th, 1908 . On December 12, 1956, a law was passed to found the city and the place became an independent municipality by hiving off from João Pessoa, to which it previously belonged, with effect from January 31, 1957.
economy
With the Porto de Cabedelo, which opened in 1908, Cabedelo has the largest seaport in the state of Paraíba. From here the export goods go all over the world. In 2002, 930,000 tonnes were transshipped, most of which, however, was shipped in national transshipment ( cabotage ). Bulk cargo (solid and liquid) is the main focus of port handling with a share of 690,000 tons.

Cabedelo is internationally known for its colorful carnival . Cabedelo is a center of musical culture in northeastern Brazil.
environment
In Cabedelo great importance is attached to the preservation of the surrounding nature. The beauties of the mouth of the Rio Paraíba river attract many tourists. Beaches with offshore coral banks, coastal forest, peninsula (Restinga) and mangrove forests are the natural riches of this area and are accordingly protected. Jacaré (crocodile) beach is a central tourist meeting point.
