The Ilha da Restinga is a river island in the estuary of the Brazilian Paraíba do Norte river, just before it flows into the South Atlantic .
The 5.3 square kilometer, now uninhabited island is located in the state of Paraíba to the west of the city of Cabedelo . Restinga is the name in Brazilian Portuguese for a native form of tropical rainforest that still occurs sporadically on the coast. Mangroves make up an essential part of the vegetation. The avifauna is characterized by diversity: Snowy Egret , marble herons , strip herons , Cocoi Heron , scarlet macaw , Least Bittern , rufous-collared sparrow , Great Kiskadee , moorhen are few. In addition to fish, there are crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp .
The location in the extreme east of the subcontinent made the Ilha da Restinga interesting even in the Age of Discovery . It was first recorded on a map in 1587. Allegedly, at the end of the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century, attempts were made to cultivate sugar cane , against the eventually successful resistance of the local Potiguaras . On the other hand, the construction of a fort begun in 1579 by a Portuguese colonel named Manuel de Azevedo, which began in 1585 according to other sources, did not help either .
A number of shipwrecks have been discovered to the west of the island, more than half of which is privately owned today and which had different names in historical times.
