Espostoa lanata is a species of plant in the genus Espostoa from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet lanata means '(Latin lanatus) woolly, woolly'.
description
Espostoa lanata growing tree-like branched in the upper parts of shoots and reaches stature heights of 1.5 to 7 meters. A trunk up to 1 meter high and 20 centimeters in diameter is formed. The spread or ascending shoots are several meters long and have a diameter of 6 to 10 centimeters. There are 18 to 25 rounded ribs that are 5 to 8 millimeters high and are separated from each other by straight furrows. The elliptical areoles on it, 7 to 10 millimeters apart, are recognizable despite the numerous hairs and thorns . The single central spine , which can also be missing, is 2 to 5 centimeters long. The 30 to 40 spread, reddish or yellowish brown radial spines turn gray with age and are 3 to 8 millimeters long. The four to five ribs cephalium is up to 1 meter long and consists of light brown to gray wool up to 3 centimeters long.
The funnel-shaped purple to light purple flowers are 4.5 to 5.5 inches long and reach a diameter of 3 to 3.5 inches. The top-shaped, more or less purple-red fruits have a length of up to 2.5 centimeters and a diameter of the same size.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Espostoa lanata is distributed in Ecuador in the Loja province and in Peru in the Piura , Amazonas , Cajamarca and Lambayeque regions at altitudes of 500 to 2000 meters.
It was first described as Cactus lanatus in 1823 by Karl Sigismund Kunth . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in the genus Espostoa in 1920 .
Nomenclatory synonyms are Cereus lanatus (Kunth) DC. (1828), Cleistocactus lanatus (Kunth) FACWeber ex Rol.-Goss. (1904), Pilocereus lanatus (Kunth) FACWeber (1904) and Oreocereus lanatus (Kunth) Britton & Rose 1916.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
