Caesioscorpis theagenes is a marine fish belonging to the group of perch relatives that occurs on the west coast of Australia.

features

The holotype is 14 cm long. The body is lanceolate and laterally flattened. The head is pointed with a terminal mouth. The laterally arranged eyes are relatively large. The jaws are covered with small teeth. Palatine teeth are missing. The nostrils are round. There are two small, flat spines on the gill cover. The sideline is fully developed. The pectoral and ventral fins are relatively short. The caudal fin is deeply forked. The scales are medium in size, cover the head except for the tip of the snout and the chin, the entire body and partially extend over the fins.

Caesioscorpis theagenes is light green in color on the upper side of the body. The dorsal and caudal fins are also light greenish. The belly and the sides of the body below the sideline are silvery. The eyes are bluish.

Caesioscorpis theagenes lives close to the coast in rock and coral reefs . The holotype was caught in an oyster- covered pool in a rock hole near a blue hole 30 miles north of Carnarvon .

Systematics

Caesioscorpis theagenes was first described in 1945 by the Australian ichthyologist Gilbert Percy Whitley and assigned to the snapper (Lutjanidae) because of the external similarity with the species of the genus Caesio . Later, the kind in the family was groupers (Serranidae) asked, but no one subfamily could be assigned because the necessary features not expresses were. In March 2020, the American ichthyologist Lynne R. Parenti and her colleague John Ernest Randall finally introduced the monotypical Caesioscorpididae family, which is closely related to the sawfish.
