The Café Tortoni is a coffeehouse on the Avenida de Mayo 825 in Buenos Aires ( Argentina ). It was opened in 1858 by the French immigrant Touan and named after the eatery Tortoni on the Boulevard des Italiens, Paris .

history

Café Tortoni was originally located at the intersection of Avenida Rivadavia and Esmeralda streets. The building in which the Tortoni is located today was formerly the Templo Escocés (Scottish Temple). In 1880 it moved to its current location, the entrance was on Av. Rivadavia. In 1898 the facade was renewed by the architect Alejandro Christophersen and the entrance was moved to Avenida de Mayo . Shortly afterwards it was sold to the French Celestino Curutchet.

In 1926 La Peña (a meeting place where folklore / Nueva Canción is played and food and drinks are offered) was opened in the basement of the house . In 1943 this meeting place was closed. Among his visitors were Alfonsina Storni , Baldomero Fernández Moreno , Juana de Ibarbourou , Arthur Rubinstein , Ricardo Viñes , Roberto Arlt , José Ortega y Gasset , Jorge Luis Borges , Molina Campos and Benito Quinquela Martín .

The café itself was a meeting place for politicians like Lisandro de la Torre and Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear , famous Argentinians like Carlos Gardel and Juan Manuel Fangio and for international personalities like Albert Einstein , Federico García Lorca , Hillary Clinton , Robert Duvall and King Juan Carlos I. of Spain .

The cellar is currently used by jazz and tango musicians , and book presentations and poetry competitions take place there.

The coffee house has retained its fin de siècle interior from the early days, there are also billiards tables and you can play dominoes and darts.
