Cala Figuera ("Fig Bay") is a small place and a bay in the southeast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca .

location

The place and the bay are located on the southeast coast of the island in the region ( comarca ) Migjorn , about 62 km from Palma de Mallorca and about 5 km from the city of Santanyí .

description

The place is located in a fjord-like bay and was formerly the port of Santanyí. The bay consists of two parts (inlets), the Caló d'En Boira and Caló d'En Busques , which form a Y. At the hidden end of the left arm are the fishermen's houses with their characteristic boat garages. In 2011 Cala Figuera had 770 inhabitants, 730 of whom lived within the closed development of the place.

The neighboring towns are the town of Santanyí and Cala Santanyí .

history

The first mention of Cala Figuera is in 1306. In 1569 the watchtower Torre d'en Beu was built east of the bay . The first residential buildings were built at the end of the 19th century. In 1938 the first church of Cala Figuera was built, which is still located in the center of the village - used for tourism purposes as a eatery.

tourism

Tourism in Cala Figuera had its peak in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s the number of visitors decreased. This results in a clearly noticeable structural change. Some older hotel buildings have been demolished, other buildings are empty. Instead of new hotels, condominiums with upscale furnishings are increasingly being built.
