Beaches and bays in Mallorca |
Cala Varques (' Barken Bay') is a small bay with a sandy beach in the east of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located on the coast of the municipality of Manacor between the towns of S'Estany d'en Mas and Cales de Mallorca .
Location and description
The Cala Varques is away from the nearest tourist settlements Cala Romantica (Cala Romàntica), 2 km to the north, and Cales de Mallorca, 3.8 kilometers to the south, in the nature reserve Cales Verges de Manacor (type ANEI-Àrea natural d'especial interès). The bay is bordered by the headlands Punta de Llevant to the south adjoining bay Racó de sa Teula and Punta d'en Barrafau to the northern Cala Falcó .
In the direction of Cala Falcó there is a small bay of Cala Varques in the rocks , which is called es Caló Blanc . The area is privately owned by Can Fresquet and Can Josep Talaia estates . On the shores of Cala Varques there is a larger beach about 70 meters long and a small beach about 150 meters southeast of it, which can only be used when the waves are weak (in 2008 this was not available even when the water was calm). Both are framed by rocks that form a steep coast northeast of the main beach , from which the sea water has washed away caves .
In the warm season, the cliffs of the steep coast are used for free climbing exercises , the so-called " Deep Water Soloing " (DWS), called "Psicobloc" in Mallorcan. In summer, Cala Varques is also a popular anchorage for ships. In the back of the main beach of the bay there is a pine forest . Tents can often be found in it, even though the private owners have banned camping at Cala Varques , not least to deal with the rubbish problem. The beach, however, is clean. It consists of fine, light sand with no seagrass residues , as is often found on Mallorca, and slopes gently into the sea. Lately, the beach has seen increased visitor numbers, which is why it is now temporarily monitored by lifeguards. At Cala Varques , people often swim naked .
Access
From the MA-4014 road between Porto Cristo and Portocolom branches off 6 kilometers behind Porto Cristo (shortly after kilometer stone 10), about 150 meters before the right-hand junction of the MA-4015 road to Manacor , on the left a drivable dirt road, which has been on since summer Parking is prohibited in 2015. After 1350 meters, this leads to an iron gate that is half-locked with a chain. A partly stony path leads from there after about 800 meters down to the beach of Cala Varques .
