Beaches and bays in Mallorca

Cala Falcó (' Falcon Bay') is a small bay on the east coast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located in the southeast of the municipality of Manacor between the towns of Cales de Mallorca and S'Estany d'en Mas .

Location and description

Cala Falcó
Cova de Cala Falcó

The Cala Falcó is a rocky sea inlet about 50 meters long and 70 meters wide on the steep coast of Manacor, about 10 kilometers southeast of the main town of the municipality. The northwest-facing bay is bounded in the southeast by the Punta d'en Barrufau peninsula and merges with the coastline of Sa des Forat to the northeast . The immediate hinterland of Cala Falcó , the Marina de Cala Falcó , is undeveloped. It is part of the 6.27 km² large natural area of special value (Àrea natural d'especial interès - ANAI) of the Cales Verges de Manacor , according to the Natural Area Act (ANAI / ARIP) to protect the soil from construction.

The area around Cala Falcó belongs to the Can Frasquet estate . The bay can therefore only be reached to a limited extent, as some of the paths leading through the private property are blocked by locked gates, including the main access route from the southwest. In the immediate vicinity of Cala Falcó there are several cave systems , some of which are accessible and have underground lakes. These include the Cova de sa Piqueta , the Cova des Pont , the Cova des Xots and the Cova des Pirata to the west and north of the bay . On the coast there is the Cova des Moro to the northeast and the Cova des Coloms, which can only be reached by water, to the southeast . Directly on the north side of the bay is the entrance to the Cova de Cala Falcó , a karst cave that is no longer illuminated a few meters behind the entrance.

The dimensions of the beach at Cala Falcó vary greatly. In some years the sand surface can have a length of 20 and a width of 15 meters, but it can also be only 3 × 3 meters. The bay is framed on both sides by rocks, which rise only slightly towards the interior of the island, but rise more steeply on the coast. Due to the relatively open location, seaweed deposits can form on the shoreline . The immediate vicinity of the bay is poor in vegetation, next to low bushes there are only a few standing pine trees . The Cala Falcó is rarely visited, but it is a stopover for hikers and those interested in caves.

Access

From the road MA-4014 between Porto Cristo and Portocolom branches off 6 kilometers behind Porto Cristo (shortly after kilometer stone 10), about 150 meters before the right-hand junction of the road MA-4015 to Manacor , on the left a drivable dirt road. After 1350 meters, this leads to an iron gate that is half-locked with a chain. A partly stony path leads from there after about 800 meters down to the beach of Cala Varques . From there you can go north on the well-trodden paths over the Caló Blanc and past the Cova Marina des Pont , a collapsed coastal cave, to Cala Falcó . A hiking trail running north-east above the bay reaches the town of S'Estany d'en Mas (also called Cala Romàntica) after 1.6 kilometers .
