The California Memorial Stadium is a stadium in Berkeley , California , on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley . On December 5, 2013, the University and Kabam, Inc. announced a 15-year partnership. The stadium is called Kabam Field at California Memorial Stadium . The contract is valued at $ 18 million.

history

The stadium opened in 1923 and is primarily used as the venue for the California Golden Bears football games , which play in the Pacific-12 Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . On November 27, 2006, the stadium was added to the National Register of Historic Places .

The Memorial Stadium was funded by private donations, in memory of the Californians who gave their lives in World War I have lost.

The audience capacity at the opening was 72,609. From 2010 to 2012, the stadium was renovated for 321 million US dollars. The plans for the renovation dragged on for over 30 years. This reduced the available space to 63,186 and was last reduced to 62,467 after work in 2013. The record number of spectators was achieved in 1947 with 83,000 spectators against a team of the Navy . Its location in the hills of Berkeley gives spectators in the top rows a panoramic view of San Francisco Bay .

Since the stadium stands on the so-called Hayward Fault, it was retrofitted in such a way that the building can be divided into two parts without major problems in the event of a quake.

Until 1980 the playing field consisted of natural grass . From 1981 to 1994 the facility had artificial turf . After a temporary return to the natural green, artificial turf has been used again since 2003.

Traditionally, at the annual derby against Stanford University's rivals , known as the Big Game , the hill behind the stadium, Tightwad Hill , is used as a spectator area to watch the game for free.

On November 27, 2006, the California Memorial Stadium was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a monument .
