Antônio Callado (born January 26, 1917 in Niterói , state of Rio de Janeiro , † January 28, 1997 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian journalist , playwright and writer .

Life

Antônio Callado's father Dario was a doctor and pharmacist. He died of tuberculosis in 1938. Echoes of his father's pharmacy can be found in the character Ramiro from his novel Quarup .

Callado studied law in his native Niterói. Although he successfully completed his studies in 1939, he never worked as a lawyer. Instead, he earned his living full-time as a journalist. He had been writing for the daily newspapers O Globo and Correio da Manhã , whose editorial offices were in Rio de Janeiro, since 1937 .

In 1941 - in the middle of the Second World War - he arrived in London on a cargo ship of the Royal Navy . Callado describes this voyage in his novel Memórias de Aldenham House . In London he worked on the Latin American editorial team of the BBC . In 1947 he left the BBC and worked for two years in Paris for the Brazilian service of TF1 . But homesickness had long since infected him. Even in London he read everything he could get his hands on about Brazil and vowed to travel inland when he returned.

In 1947 he returned to Rio de Janeiro and continued to work for the Correio da Manhã , of which he was editor-in-chief from 1954 to 1960. He was hired by the publishing house of the Encyclopædia Britannica to edit the 1st edition of the Enciclopédia Barsa (one of the most important encyclopedias in Brazil), which was published in 1963. As editor of Jornal do Brasil he reported z. B. 1968 about the Vietnam War .

In 1974 he lectured at the Universities of Cambridge (GB) and Columbia (USA). In 1975 he said goodbye to journalism in order to devote himself exclusively to literature from now on. His works from the 1950s consisted primarily of plays that were enthusiastically received by audiences and critics. The most successful, however, was Pedro Mica (director: Paulo Francis; set design: Oscar Niemeyer ; title role: Milton Moraes), which was later made into a film with the football star Pelé in the lead role.

His most important novels were written in the 1960s and 1970s. Since Callado was one of the writers who resisted the military dictatorship , he was jailed twice. Callado's most important works in this context are Quarup , Sempreviva ( Eng . Lucinda ) and Bar Don Juan .

Callado always wrote by hand and had a strictly scheduled work rhythm, which also included two daily walks. He also had a small portable table built for him that would accompany him throughout the house and enable him to write anywhere. Furthermore, he never discussed his work with anyone or let anyone read it until it was finally finished.

Antonio Callado has received numerous awards and prizes, both in Brazil and around the world. From 1994 until his death he was a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras . From his 1943 marriage with Jean Maxine Watson (English employee of the BBC) had three children, including the actress Tessy Callado. Since 1976 he was married to Ana Arruda.
