Life

MacDonald was born into a von Croftern family. He attended the Bayble School and the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway on the Hebridean island of Lewis . He then studied at the University of Edinburgh and was a lecturer in political philosophy at the University of California in Los Angeles . MacDonald was also chairman of the Future of Europe Trust .

Political career

Since the Labor politician Malcolm Macmillan lost the mandate of the Western Isles constituency in the 1970 general election, the SNP politician Donald Stewart held the mandate against various Labor Party candidates. In the 1987 general election , the party sent MacDonald into the running. He inherited his party colleague Brian Wilson . Stewart withdrew to these elections, so that the SNP also put up a new candidate with Ian Smith . On election day, MacDonald received 42.7% of the vote and thus clearly prevailed against his opponents. MacDonald held his mandate in the following general election in 1992 , 1997 and 2001 and thus represented the constituency for four terms in the British House of Commons . After losing votes, MacDonald was unable to assert himself against the SNP candidate Angus MacNeil in the 2005 general election and left parliament.

In 1997 MacDonald was appointed Secretary of Parliament to Scotland Minister Donald Dewar . He held a ministerial post in the Scottish Office between 1997 and 1999. At the parliamentary level, MacDonald remained rather pale, especially after 1999. He is described as a calm and considered character.
