Political career

MacNeil first appeared in the 2001 general election to national elections. In the constituency of Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber , however, he only achieved the second largest share of the vote behind the Labor candidate David Stewart and thus missed the entry into the British House of Commons . In the general election in 2005 MacNeil ran for the mandate of the constituency Na h-Eileanan an Iar , whose mandate the Labor politician Calum MacDonald held since 1987. On election day, MacNeil won 44.9% of the votes and thus received the constituency's mandate. He defended his mandate in the following 2010 , 2015 and 2017 .

McNeil gained wider notoriety when he and Martin Bell initiated investigations into the award of Life Peerages in return for financial contributions. In 2006 he was named the best Scottish politician in the House of Commons for this reason.
