Malcolm Macmillan

Malcolm Kenneth Macmillan (born August 21, 1913 - November 17, 1978 ) was a Scottish Labor Party politician .

Political career

Since its installation in the British general election in 1918 , the constituency of Western Isles , which includes the entire Outer Hebrides , has always sent Liberal MPs. So the mandate various politicians talked of the Liberal Party , the existing 1922-1923 National Liberal Party and the 1931 existing National Liberal Party . Since 1929 the first liberal, then national liberal Thomas Ramsay held the mandate of the constituency. In this traditionally liberal constituency, the Labor Party had only sent its own candidate into the race in two elections, with John MacDiarmid achieving the best Labor result with 32.5% in 1929.

For the general election in 1935 , the Labor Party on the Western Isles elected Malcolm Macmillan, who was just 22. He competed against the incumbent National Liberal Thomas Ramsay and the non-party Alexander MacEwen . With a share of the vote of 41.1%, Macmillan prevailed against his opponents and moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . The victory in this liberal constituency came as a surprise, but it reflected the rising trend of the Labor Party after its heavy losses in the previous 1931 election . In the by-elections in the constituency of Ross and Cromarty in 1936, Macmillan supported his party colleague and later Scotland Minister Hector McNeil .

In the following general election in 1945 , 1950 , 1951 , 1955 , 1959 , 1964 and 1966 , Macmillan held his lower house mandate against various challengers. One reason for his defeat in the 1970 general election may be the lack of a solution to the problems of the island constituency's population, who struggled with isolation and inadequate infrastructure. Donald Stewart , the candidate of the Scottish National Party (SNP), which ran for the first time in this constituency, won the majority with 43.1%, replacing Macmillan, who had represented the constituency for 35 years. In total, the Labor Party lost 63 seats in this election and Macmillan was among those who were not yet eligible for a pension due to their age and were looking for a job. After Macmillan fell out with his party, he joined the following in February 1974 as an independent Labor-affiliated candidate. With a share of the vote of 6.9%, however, he achieved the worst result of the four candidates.
