Calycobathra variapenella is a butterfly from the family of Chrysopeleiidae .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 10 to 11 millimeters. Thorax and tegulae are gray-brown. The forewings are ocher-gray to gray-brown and have indistinct and irregular spots and lines along the veins , especially in the apical area . The fringed scales are ocher gray. The hind wings are pale gray and darker on the Costa loader. The abdomen has a pale ocher-gray sheen.

In the males, the uncus is short and sickle-shaped. The blades are slender and curved inwards distally . They gradually taper to a spatula-shaped apex. There is a sharp tooth on the inside of the valve base. It is densely covered with coarse bristles. Three long and curved dorsal bristles arise near the base and reach up to half the length of the valve. The bristles on the outside are short and hair-like. The praises of the vinculum are rounded. The aedeagus is curved and heavily flattened laterally . It widens distally. There are one to three triangular teeth dorsally , but only one anteriorly . The males can be distinguished from other species of the genus by the laterally flattened aedeagus and the strong apical tooth.

In females, the slit-shaped bulge of the seventh sternite is triangular and sclerotized . The fold of the sixth sternite is wide and has almost straight edges. The ostium has the shape of a large oblique slit and is arranged slightly offset to the left. The genital plate is more or less narrow trapezoidal and has two large V-shaped side shields, some of which are provided with a reticulate structure. The inner arms of the lobes have long protrusions that point towards the slit-shaped bulge. The ductus bursae runs in a few turns and is provided with a sclerotized stiffening band. The antrum is very broad, sack-shaped and densely covered with hairs on the inside. The corpus bursae is oval and provided with two small spiky signs with a round base.

Similar species

Calycobathra variapenella is similar to Calycobathra acarpa , but is darker and the longitudinal lines on the forewings are coarser.

distribution

Calycobathra variapenella is native to Turkey , the northeast of the Caucasus , the Transcaucasus, and Central Asia .
