The Camarasauridae are a family of sauropod dinosaurs . Its validity is controversial, which is why this name is no longer used by many researchers. The only genus that can be safely assigned to this family is the eponymous Camarasaurus . Some other genera, including Opisthocoelicaudia and Euhelopus , were previously ascribed to the Camarasauridae, but are now considered to be representatives of other, only distantly related groups.

Definition, validity and genera

So far there is no definition of this taxon . Paul Sereno regards the Camarasauridae as identical to Camarasaurus and thus obsolete, since he regards Camarasaurus as the only valid representative of the group.

Upchurch (1998) ascribed the genus Aragosaurus to the Camarasauridae , which later authors, however, rejected; So Upchurch and colleagues (2004) classify Aragosaurus only within the large group of Eusauropods .

Upchurch and colleagues (2004) nevertheless list the Camarasauridae as a valid group and assign it to the genus Haplocanthosaurus in addition to Camarasaurus . The relationship of Haplocanthosaurus , however, is highly controversial - classifications as Diplodocidae and as native Macronaria are being discussed .

Originally, Opisthocoelicaudia and Euhelopus were also assigned to the Camarasauridae - while Euhelopus is mostly regarded as a representative of the Titanosauriformes, Opisthocoelicaudia is considered an advanced representative of the Titanosauria .

Finds

In 1999 , three fossils of dead Camarasaurs that were once washed into the sea were found in an abandoned quarry near the Nettelstedter Bergsee , or in the spoil of the one that surrounds the lake.
