Camille Sandorfy (born December 9, 1920 in Budapest , † June 6, 2006 in Paris ) was a Hungarian-Canadian theoretical chemist ( quantum chemistry , molecular spectroscopy ).

Sandorfy studied chemistry at the University of Szeged , where he received his doctorate in 1946. In 1949 he did his doctorate again at the Sorbonne . In 1954 he emigrated to Canada and was initially Assistant Professor at the University of Montreal , from 1956 Associate Professor and from 1959 Professor.

He carried out pioneering studies in molecular orbital theory on polyatomic molecules with σ-bonds (especially saturated hydrocarbons) and on the acid / base properties of aromatics in excited states.

He also dealt with molecular spectroscopy (vibration spectra of molecules with bound hydrogen in the IR, observation of Rydberg states of organic molecules in the far UV). His spectroscopic investigations also had biochemical applications (possible role of hydrogen bonds in anesthesia, visual mechanism via models of the chromophores of rhodopsin ).

In 1990 he received the Schrödinger Medal . He is a member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science , received the Order of Canada (1995) and was a Knight of the National Order of Quebec. In 1982 he received the Prix Marie-Victorin of Quebec, 1980 the Herzberg Medal and 1993 the Heyrovsky Gold Medal of the Czech Academy of Sciences. He was an honorary doctor from the Universities of Moncton and Szeged.

In 1967 he became a member of the Royal Society of Canada and in 1993 of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
