Fort Drum is a military base of the US Army . The base is located in the north of the state of New York east of Watertown in Jefferson County and covers an area of ​​434 km². The base is named after Lieutenant General Hugh Aloysius Drum . The unit has existed since 1908. Until 1974 it was called Pine Camp .

The base is not only home to a large part of the 10th US Mountain Division , the only major unit of this branch of the Army, but also a training, mobilization and administration center for the US Army Reserve , which trains over 80,000 reservists there every year. At the same time, the base also serves as a training and education center for units of the US National Guard .

In 2008 almost 19,000 soldiers were permanently stationed at Fort Drum .
