Camponotus nigriceps
( Smith , 1858)

Camponotus nigriceps is a species of ant from the genus of the Ross ants ( Camponotus ) within the subfamily of the scale ants (Formicinae). She is originally from Australia. Smith described a specimen with a distinctly black head, to which the additional species nigriceps (nigra, Latin for black and cephal, Greek for head) refers.

features

The workers' heads are black or dark brown, sometimes with lighter spots. Mandibles and anterior clypeus (head shield) are usually darker, sometimes lighter. Mesosoma and Petiolus are honey-colored or light brown, sometimes reddish. The coxa and femur are lighter, the tibia and tarsus are reddish brown. The gaster is black to light brown, sometimes the rear part is a little darker than the front part. Most of the head is never lighter than most of the gasser. According to Smith, the species is thinly covered with upright, rust-colored hair.

Some populations of Camponotus nigriceps resemble Camponotus loweryi and Camponotus eastwoodi in color and hair .

distribution

Camponotus nigriceps occurs throughout Australia with the exception of the Northern Territory and the north of Western Australia .

Taxonomy

Camponotus nigriceps was first described in 1858 by the British entomologist Frederick Smith using a worker as Formica nigriceps . The German doctor , naturalist and entomologist Julius Roger placed the species in the genus of the horse ants ( Camponotus ) in 1863 .
